Water UK said the new charges mean the average annual bill from April 2020 to March 2021 will be £396.60 down from £413.33.

This will vary depending on the water supplier used and household's circumstances.

Water UK said that, after inflation, average bills are still around the same level as a decade ago in contrast to the increases seen for rail services.

Chief executive Christine McGourty said: "For around £1 a day, customers get the world-class quality they need and their waste water managed responsibly.

"Companies are also committed to investing for the future and protecting the environment, with an ambitious goal to achieve net zero carbon emissions for the sector by 2030.
