Now when the war between new high definition formats is over, at lest it seems that's over, we can expect Blu-ray discs to appear in more and more computers on our desktop. Or lap, as we will see on this example.
Sony's line of VAIO notebooks always was considered as one the prettiest notebooks on the market. They are attractive, with nice design and every one of them has something that distinguishes it from the competition. Sony AR790 is the notebook that will try to replace your desktop computer and it seems that it will succeed.
The VAIO AR790 weight around 3.8 kilograms (8.4 lbs.) with standard battery but it package of features justifies that weight. After all, Sony calls it "desktop replacement" and "multimedia powerhouse", so it can't be light as Mac Air. But contrary to Air, it offers no compromise when it comes to capabilities.
The VAIO AR790 ha 17-inch wide screen display that utilizes XBRITE-HiColor LCD technology, which means it is aimed at high definition movies. And those movies you'll play from the Blu-ray disc and watch on your TV. The heart of the VAIO AR notebook is Intel's Intel® Core 2 Duo processor T9300 that beats on 2.50GHz and is based on the new Intel' hafnium technology. At your disposal there are 4MB of memory, 400GB hard drive and NVIDIA GeForce Go 8600M GT graphics card with 512MB dedicated video RAM that creates a picture of 1920x1200 pixels. That said, it is understandable that battery will last around 2.5 hours what is a very good result considered what's in the box. There is an option of TV tuner; there are slots for memory cards of several types. While you're watching your favourite film the sound will be enhanced thru Sound Reality technology.
However, the most interesting part of this new VAIO is the Blu-ray disc. In technical specifications you'll see: BD-R/-RE/-ROM/ DVD±RW/±R DL/RAM Drive. That terrifying amount of data means that you can use Blu-ray to watch movies or make a back up of 50GB of your valuable data on a single disc. The 1080 HD picture can be sent to your TV via cable. (So, your HD TV set won't be useless anymore :-))
As any other VAIO, the new AR790 looks great. It kept a great design of previous models and added a little more. It's back that looks like a piano is fantastic. The chassis made of lightweight magnesium alloy will create a lots of envy looks at the business meeting.
It must be said that all models of VAIO doesn't have all the technologies described here included, but I suggest that you go for top of the line. You'll get a true desktop replacement that, by the way, looks great. In this case there's no point in saving: Stuff it with everything that Sony offers, lay back and enjoy. ■
