Cheshire, Conn., USA - April 22, 2014, Cheshire, Conn., USA - Alexion Pharmaceuticals, Inc. announced the appointment of John T. Mollen to the company's board of directors.

Mr. Mollen was most recently special advisor to the Chairman of EMC Corporation and previously served as EMC's Executive Vice President, Human Resources (HR) for 14 years.
While at EMC, Mr. Mollen led the global human resources function to ensure the availability of world-class talent to drive business success and his responsibilities included executive, leadership, and employee development; compensation and benefits; staffing; and all of the people-related aspects of acquisition integration.
Prior to joining EMC, Mr. Mollen was Vice President of Human Resources at Citigroup Inc. Mr. Mollen serves as a director for a number of not-for-profit and professional boards, including the New England Healthcare Institute, the HR Policy Association, Center on Executive Compensation, Worcester Polytechnic Institute Board of Trustees and Chairman of its Compensation Committee, and as an advisory board member for Working Mother magazine.
Mr. Mollen received a bachelor's degree in economics from St. John Fisher College in Rochester, N.Y., and a master's degree in labor relations from St. Francis University in Loretto, Pa.
The company also announced that Joseph A. Madri and Larry L. Mathis will retire at the conclusion of the current term on May 5, 2014, after 22 years and 10 years of service to the company, respectively.
Mr. Madri is a founder of Alexion and has been a director of the company since February 1992. He is currently a Professor of Pathology and Director of Education at the Yale School of Medicine, and has been a faculty member there since 1980.
Mr. Madri serves on the editorial boards of numerous scientific journals and is the author of more than 243 scientific publications. He works in the areas of regulation of angiogenesis, vascular cell-matrix interactions, cell-cell interactions, lymphocyte endothelial cell interactions and endothelial and smooth muscle cell biology and has been awarded a Merit award from the National Institutes of Health.
Mr. Madri received his B.S. and M.S. in Biology from St. John's University and M.D. and Ph.D. in Biological Chemistry from Indiana University.
Mr. Mathis has been a director of Alexion since March 2004. He currently works as an executive consultant with D. Petersen & Associates, providing counsel to select clients on leadership, management, governance, and strategy. Prior to joining D. Petersen & Associates, he worked for 27 years within The Methodist Hospital System in Houston, TX, serving as the founding President and CEO, consultant to the Chairman of the Board, and as a member of the hospital system's Board of Directors.
During his extensive career in the healthcare industry, Mr. Mathis has served as a member of the board of directors of a number of national, state and local industry and professional organizations, including Chairman of the board of directors of the Texas Hospital Association, the American Hospital Association, and the American College of Healthcare Executives, and has served the federal government as Chairman of the National Advisory Council on Health Care Technology Assessment and as a member of the Medicare Prospective Payment Assessment Commission. ■
