Barclays Africa appoints Mark Merson as director

Johannesburg, South Africa - December 31, 2013, Johannesburg, South Africa - Barclays Africa Group announced Mark Merson has been appointed as a non-executive director, effective January 1, 2014.

Mr. Merson is the Barclays Business Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and CFO for Barclays Corporate and Investment Banking (CIB). He joined Barclays in 2003 as Group Financial Controller and during his career to date, has held positions as the Head of Investor Relations and Financial Controller and CFO for UK and EMEA in the Investment Bank before becoming global CFO for CIB.

Mr. Merson is a graduate of the University of Oxford, a chartered accountant and was previously a partner in the financial services consulting practice of Deloitte.

Mr. Merson replaces Robert Le Blanc as a representative of Barclays PLC. Mr. Le Blanc is retiring as non-executive director of Barclays Africa Group, effective 31 December 2013.

Mr. Le Blanc joined the Board as a non-executive director in 2007. He is a member of the Group Risk and Capital Management and Directors' Affairs Committees. He worked for many years at JP Morgan in the capital markets, fixed income, emerging markets and credit areas and later in the risk management function.
