Barclays chairman Marcus Agius resigns
Mr. Agius joined the Board on September 1, 2006 as a non-executive Director and was appointed as Chairman from January 1, 2007. Mr. Agius's background in banking began at Lazard where he worked from 1972 to 2006, latterly as Chairman of Lazard in London and Deputy Chairman of Lazard LLC.
Mr. Agius was Chairman of BAA plc until 2006 and is currently Senior Independent Director of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and Chairman of the Trustees of The Royal Botanic Gardens. Mr. Agius is also Chairman of the British Bankers' Association, a Business Ambassador for UK Trade and Investment (UKTI), a member of the Advisory Council of TheCityUK, a member of the Executive Committee of the IIEB and a member of the Takeover Panel.
Mr. Agius is Chairman of the Board Corporate Governance and Nominations Committee, a member of the Board Remuneration Committee and Chairman of the Board Citizenship Committee. He will remain in post until a succession is assured.
The company also announced that Sir Michael Rake has been appointed as Deputy Chairman. Sir Michael is currently Chairman of BT Group PLC and Chairman of easyJet PLC. Sir Michael previously worked at KPMG from 1974-2007 where he spent a number of years in Continental Europe and the Middle East.
Sir Michael was Senior Partner of the UK firm from 1998-2000 and Chairman of KPMG International from 2002-2007. He is a Director of the McGraw-Hill Companies. He was Chairman of the UK Commission for Employment and Skills between 2007 and 2010 and a Director of the Financial Reporting Council between 2007 and 2011. He was also Chairman of Business in the Community between 2004 and 2007. ■
