Ecobank Transnational appoints four new directors

Lomé, Togo - September 14, 2012, Lomé, Togo - Ecobank Transnational Incorporated, the pan-African banking group, announced the appointment of four new directors to the board.

Ne directors are Thierry Tanoh, Group Chief Executive Officer Designate; Dan Matjila, Chief Investment Officer (CIO) and Executive Director of Public Investment Corporation (PIC), as a Non-Executive Director; Patrick Akinwuntan, Group Executive - Domestic Bank, as an Executive Director; and Eddy Ogbogu, Group Executive, Operations and Technology, as an Executive Director.

Mr. Tanoh was appointed CEO Designate of the Ecobank Group at the end of 2011 and he commenced his executive role with Ecobank in July 2012. He joined Ecobank Group from the IFC, a member of the World Bank Group. During his 17-year career with the IFC, he has played a key role in expanding investments in Sub-Saharan Africa. During this time, his responsibilities included business development, deal structuring and processing of largest transactions, before taking on a broader management role.

Mr. Tanoh joined IFC in 1994 through the young professional program. He initially worked in the Asia Department. He then specialized in the chemicals and petrochemicals sector, working on transactions in Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe. He moved to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 2001, focusing on transactions in Latin America. He became Regional Director in 2006 and Vice President, Latin America & the Caribbean, Sub-Saharan Africa and Western Europe in 2008.

Prior to joining IFC, Mr. Tanoh worked for a consulting firm in Paris and with the banking commission of the West African Central Bank in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire. An Ivorian national, he graduated from Ecole Superieure de Commerce d’Abidjan, is a certified public accountant in France and holds a Masters in Business Administration from the Harvard Business School.

Mr. Matjila is and experienced finance and investments specialist with more than 20 years in senior management role both in the private sector and academic sector. He also has more than 15 years in investment management industry. He is the Chief Investment Officer and Executive Director for Public Investment Corporation (PIC). He joined the PIC in 2003 as a Risk Manager before being promoted to the position of the Chief Investment Officer and Executive Director in 2005.

Mr. Matjila is also currently a Non-Executive Director and Board member at Afrisam, Entabeni Holdings (Chairman) and Harith Partners. Prior joining the PIC, he was the Senior Manager Quantitative Research Analysis for Stanlib. Prior to joining Stanlib, he worked for Anglo American for five years where he was the Senior Manager of Quantitative Research Analysis, responsible for Derivatives (Fixed Income, Equity and Currency) and the application of quantitative techniques in Fund Management.

Mr. Matjila started his career as a Senior Mathematics lecturer at the University of the North and worked in academia for over nine years. He holds a Ph.D. (Wits), a M.Sc. (Rhodes) and a B.Sc. ons (Fort Hare), amongst other qualifications.

Mr. Akinwuntan leads the Domestic Bank, which is responsible for the retail, local corporate, public sector and microfinance businesses. He is also a member of the Group Executive Committee. Prior to his current role, he has held various responsibilities, including Group Head, Domestic Bank Products, Group Head, Operations, Technology, Transaction and Retail Banking and Managing Director of eProcess International, where he led the establishment of the Ecobank Pan-African Technology and Shared Services Centre in Accra, Ghana.

Mr. Akinwuntan was Executive Director, Retail Banking at Ecobank Nigeria between 2001 and 2005 and Group Chief Financial Officer between 1999 and 2001. He has also been Group Coordinator, Commercial Banking and Zonal Head, Western II at Ecobank Nigeria between 1996 and 1999. Before joining Ecobank, he worked for Ernst and Young, Manufacturers Merchant Bank and Springfountain Management Consultants in Nigeria.

Mr. Akinwuntan holds an MBA (Finance Option) from the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, Nigeria. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria and an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria. He is also an alumnus of the Harvard Business School’s Senior Executive Program.

Since August 2010, Mr. Ogbogu is the Group Executive responsible for Operations and Technology in Ecobank Group. He is also the Managing Director of eProcess International SA, a wholly-owned subsidiary of ETI, responsible for the Group’s Operations and Technology Shared Services. He has worked in senior banking operations and technology management roles for more than a decade in different organizations in Africa.

Before his current appointment, Mr. Ogbogu worked with Bank PHB in Nigeria where he was an Executive Director, heading the bank’s service organization, Operations and Technology, including administrative services. Prior to this, he had an illustrious 19-year career at Citibank in different African countries. He was appointed the Senior Country Operations Officer for the Citibank franchise in Nigeria in 2005 after similar role in Tanzania, Zambia and Kenya and also served as a Board Director.

Mr. Ogbogu was also responsible for overseeing Citibank’s operations and technology in the West Africa cluster. He has played leadership roles in areas such as Business Continuity, Business Risk and Compliance, Quality Service, Process Automation, ISO certifications, team building workshops, systems and data center migrations, Audit & Risk reviews and premises projects. He has served on several management and strategic committees.
