Howrey names newly promoted partners and counsel

Washington, D.C., USA - Howrey, a law firm, announces that it has invited six of its lawyers to the partnership and two to counsel, effective January 1, 2010.

Thomas Adam (Munich, Intellectual Property) - Dr. Thomas Adam is a trial lawyer and certified IP lawyer with particular experience in national and international patent and utility model litigation (including nullity and opposition proceedings) and licensing. In these areas, his emphasis is on electrical engineering, computer technology and on the telecommunications sector, including the IP/antitrust interface.

Dr. Adam has counseled SMEs and multinational corporations, including the largest European engineering conglomerate, a Japanese leader in the field of car navigation, and one of the international pioneer enterprises in the field of smart cards. As for the latter, GSM, CDMA and UMTS and security technology designed for the health, identification and banking industries play a major role and regularly include standards-related issues as FRAND and compulsory licensing. Further, Dr. Adam has extensive experience and an remarkable track record in trademark matters.

Jason Anderson (East Palo Alto, Intellectual Property) - Jason Anderson specializes in intellectual property litigation, including patent, trade secret, and copyright litigation. He has litigated various high-technology cases in areas such as database, airline reservation, and Web-conferencing software, streaming audio and video, electronic storage, Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) devices, microcontrollers, computer peripheral devices, and medical lasers.

Mr. Anderson has both jury and bench trial experience, and has also successfully resolved, through arbitration and mediation, several cases in the areas of general business, contract, and intellectual property litigation. Mr. Anderson was recently named a 2009 Northern California Rising Star in the area of intellectual property litigation by Law and Politics Magazine.

Krista Carter (East Palo Alto, Intellectual Property) -Ms. Carter's practice focuses on intellectual property litigation and strategic counseling. She represents innovative biotechnology and information technology clients in trial, appellate, and International Trade Commission (ITC) proceedings. In addition to her litigation experience, Ms. Carter has assisted in reexamination proceedings before the US Patent and Trademark Office. Prior to her legal career, Ms. Carter served in the US Air Force as a Russian Linguist and Intelligence Analyst.

Steven Cattoor (Brussels, Intellectual Property) - Mr. Cattoor is a member of the Intellectual Property team in Howrey’s Brussels office, primarily specializing in patent litigation. His practice cuts across various sectors and technologies but is particularly focused on the Life Sciences industry, where he represents a number of research-based manufacturers.

In this sector, Mr. Cattoor is also active in the IP-Antitrust-Regulatory interface, such as his recent involvement in advising innovative pharmaceutical companies in relation to the European Commission’s Pharma Sector Inquiry. He is a guest-speaker on "Introduction to Patent Law" at the University of Brussels (VUB).

Aaron Gruber (San Francisco, Global Litigation Group) - Aaron Gruber is a member of the firm’s firm's Construction practice. He represents owners (public and private), developers, design professionals, and general contractors in the resolution of disputes relating to delays and acceleration, cost over-runs, mechanic's liens, stop notices, construction defects, and design liability. Mr. Gruber also advises clients in the drafting and negotiation of construction and design agreements and compliance with jurisdictional requirements for the performance of construction and design services.

Mr. Gruber has an undergraduate degree in Architectural Engineering, with honors, from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo and a master's degree in Civil Engineering with Construction Management emphasis from California State University, Long Beach. He is also a licensed Civil Engineer in the State of California.

Jeffrey Phillips (Houston, Intellectual Property) - Mr. Phillips specializes in intellectual property matters involving a wide range of technologies, including oil and gas technologies, chemical processes and catalysts, mechanical systems, and computer and software related technologies. Mr. Phillips’ litigation experience includes both patent enforcement and patent defense in federal courts throughout the United States, including the patent litigation “hotbeds” of the E.D. Texas and W.D. Wisconsin.

He has successfully led patent litigation teams and obtained summary judgments and favorable settlement terms on behalf of his clients. He has also successfully prosecuted complex patent and trademark cases before the US Patent and Trademark Office, including appeals to the Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences and the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board.

Mr. Phillips has also counseled clients on important technology issues, such as advising on patent portfolio management, preparing opinions relating to a company’s ability to sell its products and/or practice its valuable technology, preparing pre-acquisition intellectual property due diligence assessments, and structuring and negotiating technology licensing agreements and joint development agreements.

Deanna Keysor (Chicago, Intellectual Property) - Deanna Keysor is a member of Howrey’s Intellectual Property practice group. Ms. Keysor has experience in a variety of intellectual property litigation areas including patent, copyright, trademark, trade secret and false advertising. She also has focused her practice in both the antitrust and appellate litigation areas. Ms. Keysor is experienced in all aspects of litigation from pre-filing through trial and appellate briefing.

She has experience in all aspects of discovery, including deposition practice, the management of electronic document production, briefing and arguments before the court. She also has experience in arbitration proceedings, particularly under the American Arbitration Association rules.

Ms. Keysor has worked with technologies including mechanical devices and processes, pharmaceuticals, medical devices and computer software, among others. She has litigated multiple cases arising from the medical device, pharmaceutical and automotive industries.

Arden Levy (Washington, DC, Global Litigation) - Arden Levy’s practice focuses on litigation of complex business disputes on behalf of clients in the oil refining, natural gas production, chemical, and government contracting industries, with particular emphasis on mediation and arbitration.

Her experience encompasses matters relating to products liability and toxic tort issues, insurance recovery, electronic discovery, securities fraud, government contracts, and white collar criminal defense. Ms. Levy has successfully represented policyholders seeking insurance coverage for claims on a wide range of issues, including products liability, environmental, asbestos, employment liability, director and officer corporate liability, loss of business income, and bankruptcy issues.
