John Barton to join easyJet board
Mr. Barton is a chartered accountant and he held various executive roles at JIB Group plc including that of Chief Executive from 1984 to 1997. After JIB's merger with Jardine Lloyd Thomson he became Chairman of the combined group in 1997.
He joined Next's Board in 2002, becoming Deputy Chairman in 2004 and Chairman in 2006. He has also been Chairman of Cable and Wireless Worldwide, Wellington Underwriting and Brit Insurance Holdings.
Sir Mike Rake, the current non-executive chairman, will stand down from the board.
Sir Mike was appointed to the Board of easyJet as Deputy Chairman three and a half years ago and became Chairman two years ago. He is Chairman of BT Group and Deputy Chairman of Barclays, as well as a Non Executive Director of McGraw Hill Inc. He is also Chairman of the private equity oversight group the Guidelines Monitoring Committee.
From May 2002 to September 2007, Sir Mike was Chairman of KPMG International. Prior to his appointment as Chairman of KPMG International he was Chairman of KPMG Europe and Senior Partner of KPMG in the UK. He was also previously a member of the Financial Reporting Council. He joined KPMG in 1974 and worked in Continental Europe before transferring to the Middle East to run the practice for three years in 1986.
Sir Mike transferred to London in 1989, became a member of the UK Board in 1991 and had a number of leadership roles in the UK before being elected UK Senior Partner in 1998. He is also a Vice President of the RNIB, a member of the Board of the TransAtlantic Business Dialogue, a member of the CBI International Advisory Board, the DTI's US/UK Regulatory Taskforce, the Advisory Council for Business for New Europe, and an Association Member of BUPA. ■
