Birmingham, Al., USA - September 17, 2013, Birmingham, Al., USA - BBVA Compass, a financial company, announced that Lawrence R. Uhlick is retiring as chairman of BBVA Compass and its holding company, BBVA Compass Bancshares Inc.

On September 29, 2010, Mr. Uhlick was appointed Chairman of BBVA Compass and Compass Bancshares boards of directors. Since January 2010 he had served as a member of the BBVA Compass and Compass Bancshares boards of directors.
Prior to being appointed the Chairman of BBVA Compass and Compass Bancshares, he held the position of Chief Executive Officer of the Institute of International Bankers (IIB) for 23 years.
Before joining the Institution, Mr. Uhlick served as Vice President and Assistant Resident Counsel at Morgan Guaranty Trust Company. In that capacity, he was responsible for legislative/regulatory matters and Washington activities generally. Prior to that, Mr. Uhlick was Vice President and Counsel of the New York Clearing House Association. From 1970 to 1976, he practiced law with Davis Polk & Wardwell.
Mr. Uhlick holds a Bachelor's degree from Adelphi University and a Master's degree in political science from Syracuse University. He received a J.D. from Syracuse University Law School and an L.L.M. from New York University School of Law.
The company also announced that Manolo Sanchez, BBVA Compass president and CEO, will take over as chairman, effective September 30.
Mr. Sanchez joined BBVA in September 1990. In 1994, he was appointed director and senior vice president for BBVA Paris. He was named director of the Corporate Banking Branch in 1997. His BBVA career took him to the United States in 1999 after being named director and senior vice president of Global Corporate Banking at BBVA New York. In 2000, he became senior vice president and branch manager for New York.
In 2002, Mr. Sanchez went to BBVA Bancomer in Mexico City to become chief risk officer. He returned to the U.S. in 2005 to lead Laredo National Bank – then newly acquired by BBVA – as president and CEO. He served in that position until his 2008 appointment as Community Banking Head for BBVA Compass. He assumed the helm of BBVA Compass in December 2008. ■
