London, United Kingdom - January 8, 2013, London, United Kingdom - Anglo American, a mining company, announces the appointment of Mark Cutifani as chief executive, effective April 3, 2013.

Mr. Cutifani has been Chief Executive Officer of AngloGold Ashanti Limited, the South Africa-based gold producer, since 2007 and has led the successful restructuring and development of its business, which includes operations in ten countries on four continents.
Prior to his current role, Mr was the Chief Operating Officer of CVRD Inco, the Canadian nickel company. He started his career in the coal and gold mining industries in Australia and has experience across a wide range of commodities. He has a degree in Mining Engineering and is the current President of the South African Chamber of Mines.
Anglo American's current Chief Executive, Cynthia Carroll, will step down from the Board at the Company's Annual General Meeting in April 2013 and will leave Anglo American at the end of that month.
Ms. Carroll currently chairs the Group Management Committee (GMC) and the Executive Committee (ExCo) and sits on the Safety and Sustainable Development (S&SD) Committee.
Ms. Carroll served as a Senior Vice President of Rio Tinto Alcan, Inc. (also known as Alcan Inc.) since January 1, 2002 and served as Interim President of Primary Metal business group and Interim Senior Vice President of Anglo American PLC. She served as President of Primary Metal, a division of Rio Tinto Alcan, Inc. since January 1, 2002.
Ms. Carroll served as Chief Executive Officer of Primary Metal. She joined Alcan Inc. in 1989 and held positions of increasing responsibility and several positions including Vice President, President for Bauxite, Alumina and Specialty Chemicals since 1999, Managing Director of Aughinish Alumina Ltd. in 1996 and Vice President and General Manager of Alcan Foil Products in 1991.
In 1998, Ms. Carroll became president of bauxite, alumina and specialty chemicals and in 2002 was appointed president and chief executive officer at Alcan's primary metals group and an officer of Alcan, Inc. in Montreal, Canada.
Prior to joining Alcan, Ms. Carroll was six years in gas and oil exploration, working in Colorado, Alaska, Wyoming, Utah and Montana. Ms. Carroll served as a Petroleum Geologist of Amoco for 8 years. She has been Chairman of the Board of Anglo Platinum Ltd. since September 1, 2010. She has been an Executive Director at Anglo American PLC since January 15, 2007. She has been Director of Anglo Platinum Ltd. since March 31, 2007. She serves as a Member of the Board of Directors at Aluminum Association Inc.
Ms. Carroll has been a Non-Executive Director of BP Zambia plc since 2007. She serves as a Director of The De Beers Group. She serves as a Director of De Beers SA and Non-Executive Director of BP plc. She served as a Non-Executive Director of AngloGold Ashanti Ltd. from May 5, 2007 to October 9, 2007. She served as Director of Sara Lee Corp. from August 1, 2006 to June 29, 2007. ■
