Calgary, AB, Canada - June 5, 2013, Calgary, AB, Canada - Penn West Petroleum Ltd. announced that Murray Nunns, president and CEO, has informed the board of directors of his intention to retire, effective July 1, 2013.

Mr. Nunns has been the Chief Executive Officer at Penn West Petroleum Ltd. since August 10, 2011 and President since February 2008 and Chief Operating Officer since January 2013. Mr. Nunns served as the Chief Operating Officer of Penn West from February 8, 2008 to August 2011. He has over 30 years of experience in domestic and international oil and gas exploration and production.
He served as the President and Chief Executive Officer of Crispin Energy Inc. from July 2002 to 2005. From 1993 to 2002, Mr. Nunns was involved in the management of Rio Alto Exploration Ltd (Canada) in the capacities of Executive Vice President of Exploration and Development and Chief Operating Officer and as Chief Geologist for Unocal Canada and in portfolio management in International Exploration.
Mr. Nunns has been an Executive Chairman of Monterey Attendance Exploration Ltd. since 2005. He serves as Chairman of Monterey Exploration Ltd. He served as the Chairman of Monterey Exploration Ltd. and previously served as its Executive Chairman from January 1, 2008 to February 8, 2008. He served as the Chairman of the Board of Trafalgar Energy Ltd. He serves as a Member of the Board of Managers of Tecton Energy, LLC.
Mr. Nunns has been an Independent Director of Capitol Energy Resources Ltd., since May 4, 2005. He has been a Director of Monterey Exploration Ltd. since December 29, 2005. He serves as Director of Huron Energy Corporation. He has been a Director of Penn West Petroleum Ltd. since June 9, 2009. He serves as a Director of several other oil and gas companies operating in Western Canada. He serves as a Director of Amarone Oil & Gas Ltd.
Mr. Nunns served as a Director of Midway Energy Ltd. (Formerly Trafalgar Energy Ltd.) since June 6, 2006. He served as a Director of Penn West Petroleum Ltd. from 2005 to January 11, 2008. He served as a Director of Crispin Energy Inc. since 1996. Mr. Nunns is a graduate of the University of Toronto and holds a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Geology.
David Roberts, former Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Marathon Oil Corporation, has agreed to terms of employment and will begin his new role as President and Chief Executive Officer commencing June 19, 2013.
Mr. Roberts brings more than 30 years of operational experience in the upstream oil and gas business and his knowledge and successes on such a very large scale make him a welcome addition to the senior management team at Penn West. The Board intends to appoint Mr. Roberts to the Board on commencement of his employment.
Mr. Roberts also served as Marathon's Executive Vice President Upstream for a number of years after joining Marathon in 2006 as Senior Vice President Business Development. He previously served as Executive Vice President/Managing Director for BG Group plc with responsibility for Asia and the Middle East. ■
