Dr. Caulder, currently chairman of Finistere Ventures, has a distinguished track record in the plant sciences industry and is often referred to as the "father of agricultural biotechnology". From overseeing early venture investments and the launch of new global agricultural products for Monsanto to leading numerous plant science companies to significant valuations, Dr. Caulder brings to SGB more than 40 years of management and leadership experience.
Following fifteen years at Monsanto, in 1984 Dr. Caulder became chairman and CEO of Mycogen, a start-up plant sciences company. Dr. Caulder has held leadership positions with Myelos Neuroscience; Athenix, Inc.; Chlorogen, Inc.; Entomos, Inc; S&M NuTech.; Never Compromise, Inc; and Advanced Stent Technologies, Inc. He is a member of the Advisory Council on Small Business and Agriculture of the Federal Reserve Board of San Francisco, a member of the California Governor's Council on Science and Technology, a member of the Missouri's Governor's Council on Biotechnology, a former trustee of the Rueben H. Fleet Space Center in San Diego, Calif., and served as one of the founding directors of the World Agriculture Forum in St. Louis, Mo.
Dr. Caulder has served as a science and business advisor to New Zealand's largest Crown Research Institute, AgResearch. He has served on and chaired several committees of the U.S. Office of Technology Assessment, given expert testimony before both houses of Congress, advised foreign governments on agriculture and biotechnology. Dr. Caulder has been a consultant or speaker to numerous organizations, including the Brookings Institute, The Keystone Group and the World Economic Forum.
He is frequently quoted in national media as an expert in the life sciences. Dr. Caulder has been honored as Man of the Year in Service to Agriculture by Progressive Farmer magazine and received the William Henry Hatch Memorial Award, which is the highest honor given by Land Grant Universities and Colleges. He has been the D.W. Brooks lecturer at the University of Georgia. He was elected to the National FFA's Hall of Achievement. The National Forum of Agriculture awarded Dr. Caulder the prestigious Agricultural Vision Award. He is the holder of several U.S. and foreign patents. ■
