Number of pigs and sheep in England increased

In December 2016 the total number of cattle and calves in England remained almost unchanged at 5.4 million as at December 1, 2016.

The total number of pigs in England has increased by 2.2% since December 2015 to 3.6 million. Fattening pigs also saw an increase, rising from 3.1 million to 3.2 million.

The total number of sheep and lambs in England rose by 3.4% between December 2015 and December 2016 to an estimated 11.2 million.

The female breeding flock, that makes up almost two thirds of the population, increased by 76,000 animals to 6.7 million in 2016.
