Amazon to move into Melbourne with huge warehouse twice as large as Walmart

Amazon.com unveiled the site of its first Australian warehouse on Thursday and named a German executive as country manager.

The company says it will immediately start recruiting staff to the 24,000 square metre warehouse at Dandenong South, in Melbourne's south-east.

"This is just the start," Amazon's director of operations for Australia, Robert Bruce, said in a statement.

"This new fulfilment centre will stock hundreds of thousands of products which will be available for delivery to customers across Australia when we launch our retail offering," Bruce said.

Amazon is now twice as large as Walmart, which used to be the world's biggest retailer.
