Coastal design is all about blue and white, colors that mimic bright sunshine on deep blue waters. And just like in the nature, you need one strong point without going over the edge. That focal point shoud be, of course, in a shade of blue that you like the most, and the rest is just a matter of adding subtle colors to complete the picture. Even if you don't add much details, like small boat models everybody likes, you can get that sea feeling just with colors.
Some may think the next idea is too much, but why not paint the whole floor in blue? It definitively reminds of water under your feet and another good point is that it can serve well as a basis to build on. A natural choice would be white and grey because the color of the floor is strong and it doesn't need big blue pieces, a few details will be enough. Another good thing is that blue floor will fit nicely into any room, especially if you have a smaller apartment.
However, we know that many of you love collecting things, and you can achieve coastal design by mixing colorful pieces too. From small to big, from vases to to pictures, you are free to mix styles as long as your primary color palette is blue. Building on that, you may add shiny white, light grey and shades of green. By mixing pieces you may convert an existing design into coastal, so this is an easy and cheap way to change the style of your room to sea-like.
If you are lucky enough to live near the coast, you can bring the sea even closer to you with a big, blue surface: your doors. This is a bold choice but there is in fact just one rule to follow: choose a shade of blue that connects with those that already exist in your home. Add to that bold statement a fish bowl with few stones and shells from the coast and - why not? - a sea breeze air freshener. Pick a destination, close your eyes and enjoy - you are there. ■
