We've all been there: you have some old furniture, you buy some over the years, and you end up with a room that's good but not perfect where everything goes together smoothly. Instead of throwing away your furniture and getting new, you can fix the situation easily with simple ideas. If your room is full of colors, you may calm it down with a neutral rug. Rugs are a central focal point of any room anyway, so if you take a rug of grey or earthy colors you may calm down your whole room and all pieces in it.
If your room is full of different pieces from different periods, you may spice up your eclectic style with just one huge piece, and by huge we mean in dimensions. You can reserve a piece of your wall for a large bookshelf, or you can find a large drawer from the '70s that will beg to look at it. Again, you need a focal point and by making that your all other elements will look like an embellishemnt to it. Easy and it can be cheap. Just be bold and take an element that you like, remember you are in an eclectic style where everything goes.
If your room is full of patterns and colors, you have find a central idea that will dominate. If you rug or other elements are all colored, try to find a picture, larger one, that has the same colors to connect those two pieces of your furniture and make a central point of your room. You can also find some pillows in same colors, they will be easy to spread around but just don't get excited too much with the room full or pillows. A few of them are good, a lot of them means that you don't know what you are doing.
A sofa is a big element in your room if you choose one with subltle neutral color, you will make a great step toward a good room. Leave it without any colorful pillows, or just a few of them, just let it sit there and calm things down. When you have it, you can play with the arrangement of things around it, because they all will look like an embellishment to the sofa. Choose a neutral colors, gray if you're not sure which one, and you're good to go. ■
