Turkey jobless rate at 7-year high

Turkey's unemployment rate increased further in January to the highest level in almost seven years, figures from the Turkish Statistical Institute showed.

The jobless rate climbed to 13 percent in January from 12.7 percent in the previous month.

Moreover, this was the highest unemployment rate since February 2010, when it marked 13.5 percent.

The number of unemployed people rose to 3.98 million in January from 3.87 million in December. A year ago, the jobless figure totaled 3.29 million.

The youth unemployment rate that applies to the 15-24 age group increased to 24.5 percent in January from 19.2 percent in the same month last year.

On a seasonally adjusted basis, the jobless rate dropped to 11.8 percent in January from 12.0 percent in the preceding month.
