"Golf is great game", says everyone that tried to hit a ball with a stick on a perfectly green field. You are among competitors that happen to be your friends, weather is nice, sunny day all around you, chatting and golfing... Everything is perfect, said rookie, except one little detail: the hole is to far away and the ball just won't get into it. How far is the hole? If you don't know the answer but feel that that data will bring you that "magic touch", consider GolfLogix.
Since GolfLogix are two words written as one, with suspicious capitalization, that must be some computer-based device or company. Yes, that's right. GolfLogix is a company founded eight years ago with one goal in mind: To bring you the accurate distance to the hole. Well, it may seem like a lousy business model, but it is not. In fact, it's very smart.
GolfLogix cooperates with Garmin, well-known name in GPS world, and the two of them together build GPS devices for golf players. Use of rangefinders is allowed during local competitions as a great help for players of all skills, and that was recognized by GolfLogix's management. GolfLogix produces hand-held devices, approximately half the size of a mobile phone, that uses GPS to measure interesting distances and show them on a display. Now we see the connection: Satellites once used for military purposes, now send data to GolfLogix receiver to bring you more joy and smarter, faster playing.
GolfLogix's hardware is made by Garmin, and it can hold 10 golf course maps at one time, but for an annual fee of 29,95 dollar you can chose another map from the database of 15,000 golf courses. That small, useful device shows distances to the front, center and back of the green, and all hazards. Those numbers are shown on 1,25 x 2,25-inch display with the resolution of 64 x 128 pixels. Display is visible on direct sunlight and it has backlight if you prefer to play in the sunset. Two batteries will power device for 22 hours which is, we believe, long enough for one golf session. And let's add to that that device is water-proof, so few drops or Champaign accidentally poured won't harm it.
GolfLogix obviously has lot of confidence judging by 12-month warranty. I wonder does that warranty covers the satellite malfunction? Probably not, but that's army stuff anyway so it shouldn't broke. You need a computer to download a golf course map but have no fear: judging by specifications every PC or Mac on the plant will be OK.
On of the most fascinating things is that you can propose a new golf course to be entered into database and GolfLogix will add it. OK, there's another fascinating thing: GolfLogix constantly monitors golf courses and enters new measurements it the something new is added to the filed. So, it is impossible to step into water while your device reads "50 yards to water".
GolfLogix had a simple idea "Show me the hole", but beyond small ideas there's always something great. If you play gold not because you must to, to satisfy your superior, but for pleasure, take a look at GolfLogix. You will be a professional with balls. So to speak... ■
