Carol A. Cartwright to retire from FirstEnergy board

Akron, Oh., USA - March 20, 2014, Akron, Oh., USA - FirstEnergy Corp. announced that Carol A. Cartwright will retire from the company's board of directors, effective May 20, 2014, following 22 years of service.

Dr. Cartwright joined the Ohio Edison Board of Directors in 1992. She was then named a board member of FirstEnergy Corp. when it was formed in 1997 following the merger of Ohio Edison and Centerior Energy Corp. During her tenure as a board member, FirstEnergy successfully completed mergers with GPU, Inc., in 2001, and Allegheny Energy Inc., in 2011.

Dr. Cartwright retired in 2011 as president of Bowling Green State University after nearly three years with the university. She also served a 15-year tenure as the president of Kent State University.

In addition to a 45-year career in public higher education, she has held prominent leadership roles in numerous national education organizations. She currently serves on the board of directors for PolyOne Corporation and is a member of the Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics. She is also a trustee of Heidelberg University.

Among other honors, Dr. Cartwright was inducted into the Ohio Women's Hall of Fame in her first year of eligibility. She received distinguished alumni awards from the University of Wisconsin --Whitewater and the University of Pittsburgh. Other honors include the Clairol Mentor Award in Education, the northeast Ohio ATHENA Award, the March of Dimes Franklin Delano Roosevelt Humanitarian Award for Excellence, and the ACE Mentor of the Year Award.
