Pakistan has largest king mango cluster in the world
Despite the huge production, the country only exports 6% and saves the rest for the domestic market.
Director of the Mango Research Institute, Mushtaq Alvi, said there was a bumper crop this year, adding that no consignments were returned due to fruit fly issue last year.
Alvi said that this year's success had been on the back of the recommendation that the Punjab government install up to 10 new hot water treatment plants to replace the existing 9 which were proving ineffective.
Growers were also urged not to plant guava in mango orchards because they attract fruit flies which uses them as breading grounds. They were also instructed to bury the fruit that drops from the trees, a technique which has proven successful, reducing fruit flies by 80%. ■
