Judith Leiber was born in Hungary where she studied the craft of handbag making. After the Second World War her American dream came true: almost every First Lady from 1963 has carried her custom-made bags to the U.S. Presidential Inauguration ceremonies.

In 1947 Mrs. Leiber and her husband Gerson Leiber immigrated to the U.S. and after many years working for leading New York handbag manufacturers, Mrs. Leiber launched the Judith Leiber Company in 1963, with the support of her artistic husband. The couple sold the company and retired in 1998.
