Just like in a case of a painter who has many colors to choose from, everything starts with the picture in your head and your preferences. And it starts simply: do you want a bright or a darker room? That's the first question you should answer to and that will be an easy task because we all have our preferences. Then the question is do you want a space full of vibrant colors or something more calm. We you have answers to those question you're half way there and the rest will benefit from some advice.
Then you choose the main color for your space. And again think in simple terms, don't try to imagine the right shade but stay with the basic color: green, blue, beige, white, and you will choose the right shade later. That way you will have a general idea how you want your space to look like and then you can move to a more granular approach. The next step is to think about your walls and furniture you already might have in your space because that is the basis on which you will chose fine details.
Walls are big surfaces so keep in mind that any very vibrant color, such as green, may end up like a unexpectedly unpleasant sight, such as a brigh green color that you can't look at. So, think about muddier colors to calm the space down because you always have a possibilty to bring your space to life with colorful details. If you already have furniture in your room and want to keep it, your job is to find a color for your walls that complements things you already have. That can be done in two ways.
You may choose a similar color, say a different shade of blue, or go the opposite way and choose a color that creates a contrast. Remember that you always have an option to choose colorful details, like pillows, or something with very visible texture, like carpets, so you always have an option to make your room lively. Then bring home color samples of colors you like, paint a small area of the wall with them, step away and look at them. Make some space between those two because you want to compare them to the rest of your space, not one to another. Following those simple advice will turn a painting stress into a fun experience. ■
