May 2016 had seen 393,600 tons worth of poultry shipped abroad.
Export revenue dropped less, by 2.6% to $596.9 million, down from $612 million in May 2016.
Year-to-date through May, 1.750 million tons of poultry were exported from Brazil, down 5.6% from 1.854 million a year ago. Revenue was up 9% to $2.968 billion from $2.722 billion from January to May 2016.
ABPA CEO Francisco Turra said the industry is still recovering from the aftershocks of the Brazilian Federal Police’s meat industry probe Operação Carne Fraca.
“Some markets, such as China, Hong Kong, Kuwait, etc. are still buying less than they did last year,” a press release quoted him as saying.
Turra notes, however, that exports reached extraordinary levels from March to June last year. “Some 400,000 tons. Sales in May this year are in line with average 2017 numbers,” he said. ■
